The Crazy, Fabulous Life Of A Shopaholic Retail Assistant
Shopaholics, five glorious months ago, I landed my dream job (apart from blogging for you, Dolls!) as a retail sales assistant. It's been everything I'd imagined and more... pink is my forte, fun is a right of passage and my colleagues are equally as obsessed with our work as I am. The life of a devoted Shopaholic was never going to be boring but I never could've guessed I'd be faced with so many Shopaholic dilemmas. I'm here to give you intell into my crazy but fabulous life... And I confess, Dolls, it's a journey worth riding!
Every month, the visual merchandiser welcomes herself into our store entrance with her open, brilliant arms and forages our store for every discrepancy. Spoiler alert! This girl doesn't hold back. I then watch her in awe as she corrects every seemingly insignificant detail (But I've learnt that nothing is insignificant in the eyes of a VM). And when she's finished, I'm flabbergasted. The store looks as if the red ribbon was just cut and as though not a single customer has scurried messily through each pile searching for the correct size (a personal pet peeve of mine if you can't tell!). Our VM quickly became my idol. I knew that the Shopaholic in me aspired to be just like her when I'd climbed the retail ladder. Her role was basically to add sparkly pink steroids to the mannequins, window displays and clothing piles. And she gets paid to do it. The perfectionist in me had found her place in the world and it felt good. Really good. Whether or not Tay knows it, she's my Shopaholic bestie.
Unfortunately, my crazy life has a not-so-fabulous price tag, one that I consider to be a major grade-a bummer! Every half quarter, our store receives a collection booklet, providing us with an insider peek of new stock before it hits the market. My supportive, fun & unbelievably kind colleagues huddle in excitement upon receiving our stock booklets pointing out everything we love and hate - a ritual amongst us girls that never fails to instil a magical sense of belonging inside of me. I quickly learned that saving was an important point of discussion when scavenging through the stock booklets and I thank God that I was fortunate enough to be informed of this rule before I'd racked up hundreds of dollars in debt. It's easy to get carried away with a 50% staff discount. Most things I buy have been considered and planned weeks in advance which adds sentimental value to everything I own. Allowance and budgeting, although a bummer, are the two things that allow me to continue to live my crazy, fabulous Shopaholic retail assistant life.
My crazy life has fabulous benefits that go beyond me... my loved ones are able to live vicariously through me with all of the presents I have to give. Birthdays, anniversaries & holidays call for big boxes with pink ribbons, pink tissue and pink stickers and I never fall through in this particular department. I LOVE gifting - seeing faces light up as a personalised gift is unwrapped that I meticulously planned and saved for. A gift can last forever if you choose correctly. I confess to you, Dolls, the importance of practicality when living my crazy life and in case of the rare occasion that I misjudge their adoration factor for the gift, I always print a gift receipt. They can then exchange it for something fabulous that they will cherish for years to come which is the ultimate purpose of gifting. But of course, I am a fabulous gift giver (in my not-whatsoever-biased opinion) and a gift receipt is yet to be used ;).
My life is crazy, fabulous and I love every aspect of being a Shopaholic retail sales assistant. What's your dream job, Dolls? Never fall for anything less than you could've ever dreamed of. If I can do it, so can you!
Kisses,
